TMJ Treatment at Emerald Coast Smiles by Design

Temporomandibular Joints disorder (TMJ) happens when there are problems with the joints in your jaw where the joints connect the lower jaw to the skull on each side of the head. Problems with this joint can develop when excess stress is put on the structures around the joint, including muscles, teeth, ligaments and cartilage. If you have TMJ, you will likely experience clenching and grinding of the teeth, poor posture, arthritis, injuries and structural problems. Some potential causes are genetics, hormones, low-level infections, auto-immune disease and trauma.

The Most Common Symptoms Include:
  • Jaw, neck and shoulder pain
  • Headaches
  • Popping, grinding or clicking jaw during movement
  • Teeth grinding and clenching
  • Ringing in the ears or earache
  • Difficulty opening or closing of mouth
  • Locking of the jaw

Botox Treatments for TMJ

If you have TMJ, you know how uncomfortable the symptoms are, but it also has the potential to cause damage to the teeth, gums, and jaws. Treatments can include night guards, bite guards or adjustments, BOTOX®, or a combination of all.

BOTOX® injections are used to ease one of the most common symptoms of TMJ disorder, clenching of the teeth and jaws. Just as BOTOX® injections immobilize the muscles of the face that cause wrinkles, it can be used to relax the jaw muscles and reduce the amount and intensity of clenching.

If you believe a BOTOX® treatment could help with the symptoms of TMJ you are suffering from, please contact our office today to schedule an appointment for an evaluation.
